How the interval is computed
Each species starts from a baseline interval at bright indirect light in a medium pot. These intervals are rough starting points set by the tool, not figures from a published source, so use each reminder as a cue to check the soil and water only when it is dry. The tool adjusts the baseline like this:
- Light: bright direct −1 day, bright indirect 0, medium +2 days, low light +4 days.
- Pot size: small (<6") −1 day, medium 0, large (8–12") +2 days, extra-large (12"+) +4 days.
- Season: spring/summer 0, fall +2 days, winter +4 days.
Actual needs vary by plant and season. For snake plant, NC State Extension advises letting the soil dry between waterings from spring to autumn and watering only every one to two months in winter. Iowa State Extension warns that watering on a fixed schedule almost always gives some plants too much water and others too little, and advises checking the soil on a schedule instead.
