Affiliate disclosure

Material connection disclosure
indoorplantcare.com is supported by its readers. Some of the links on this website are affiliate links, which means that if you click a link and make a qualifying purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and other affiliate programs. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. This commission is the primary way the site keeps the lights on, and it does not change the price you pay.
1. Who we are and why this page exists
This disclosure is provided by Thomas Joseph, operator of indoorplantcare.com (“we,” “us,” “our,” or the “Site”). It explains the material connections we have with third-party retailers, brands, and advertising programs, in accordance with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (16 CFR Part 255), the FTC’s endorsement guides, and applicable state consumer protection laws.
Our goal is simple: we want you to know exactly when and how we make money before you click a link or make a purchase decision based on our content.
2. Amazon Associates Program
indoorplantcare.com is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites including, but not limited to, amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.ca, and endless.com.
As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Amazon and the Amazon logo are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Amazon beyond our participation as an Associate.
3. Other affiliate and advertising relationships
In addition to Amazon Associates, we may participate in other affiliate and advertising networks, which may include but are not limited to:
- Direct retailer affiliate programs (e.g., specialty nurseries, plant retailers, gardening supply companies)
- Affiliate networks such as ShareASale, Impact, CJ Affiliate, Awin, or Rakuten Advertising
- Google AdSense, Google Ads, and other display advertising networks
- Sponsored content arrangements (always labeled as “Sponsored” on the relevant page)
Where we link to a third-party retailer, you should assume the link is an affiliate link unless we expressly state otherwise.
4. How we choose what to recommend
Editorial independence matters. Our recommendations are based on first-hand testing, published horticultural research from sources such as university extension services (NC State Extension, UW Extension, UF/IFAS, Clemson HGIC), the Royal Horticultural Society, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the ASPCA toxic plant database, and our own use of the products over time.
- No pay-to-play. No brand pays us to feature a product, write a favorable review, or rank one product above another. Commission rates do not influence which products we recommend.
- Sample products are disclosed. If a manufacturer or retailer sends us a product to test at no cost, we will disclose that fact on the relevant page. Receiving a free sample never guarantees a positive review, and we will state if a free product underperformed.
- We name bad products. If a product is poor quality, dangerous, or misleadingly marketed, we will say so by name and link to alternatives — even when we are not an affiliate for those alternatives.
- We update or remove stale recommendations. Products get reformulated, discontinued, or replaced. When we discover a previous recommendation no longer holds up, we update or remove it.
5. How affiliate links are marked
We aim to mark affiliate links technically and visually so both readers and search engines can identify them:
- HTML attributes. Affiliate links use the
rel="sponsored nofollow noopener"attributes per Google’s link attribution guidelines and our affiliate program terms. - In-content labels. Product roundups and gear pages include a disclosure block near the top of the article, above the first affiliate link.
- Site-wide notice. The footer of every page on this Site includes the statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”
You can verify the link attributes on any affiliate link using your browser’s developer tools (right-click → Inspect).
6. What an affiliate link does not mean
- It does not change the price you pay. Amazon and other affiliate retailers do not increase a product’s price because you arrived via our link.
- It does not guarantee we get a commission. Returns, cancellations, prohibited products under the affiliate program’s terms, and tracking failures (ad blockers, link cleaners, cookie rejection) can all result in no commission being paid.
- It does not obligate you to buy anything. You can ignore every affiliate link on the Site and the content is the same.
7. Pricing, availability, and product information
Prices, product availability, product specifications, ratings, and images displayed on the Site are pulled from the retailer at the time of writing and may change at any time without notice. We do not guarantee that pricing or availability shown in our content matches the retailer’s current listing. Always confirm the price, specifications, and seller on the retailer’s product page before purchasing.
We are not responsible for the accuracy of third-party product listings, for product defects, for shipping issues, for warranty claims, or for any aspect of the transaction between you and the retailer.
8. Sponsored content and paid placements
From time to time we may publish content that is paid for or sponsored by a third party. Any such content will be clearly labeled at the top of the page using terms such as “Sponsored,” “Paid Partnership,” or “Advertisement.” Sponsored content is held to the same factual standards as our editorial content; we will not publish claims we cannot verify, regardless of who is paying.
9. Email newsletter and affiliate links
Our email newsletter may also contain affiliate links. The same rules described above apply: links are tagged where the email platform supports it, no advertiser pays for placement, and the price you pay is unaffected. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link.
10. International readers
If you access the Site from outside the United States, your local consumer protection and advertising regulations may differ. The material connection disclosures on this Site are designed to comply with U.S. FTC requirements; readers in the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and other jurisdictions should interpret references to “affiliate link,” “ad,” and “sponsored” in accordance with their local equivalents (e.g., ASA in the UK, AMS Directive in the EU).
11. Not professional advice
Content on this Site, including any product recommendation, is for general informational purposes only. It is not a substitute for advice from a veterinarian (regarding plant toxicity to pets), a licensed pesticide applicator (regarding pest treatments), a medical professional (regarding allergies or skin reactions), or any other qualified professional. Use products in accordance with the manufacturer’s label and any applicable laws.
12. Changes to this disclosure
We may update this disclosure from time to time to reflect changes in our affiliate relationships, applicable law, or industry guidance. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the Site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised disclosure.
13. Questions and contact
If anything on this page is unclear, or if you believe a piece of content on our Site contains an undisclosed material connection, please contact us at tom [at] indoorplantcare.com and we will review and correct it promptly.
Not legal advice. This page is a good-faith disclosure intended to comply with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s endorsement guides and is provided for transparency.
