Philodendron Light Requirements
Philodendron needs 200–800 fc, classified as medium light. Best window direction: East-facing (ideal) or south with sheer curtain.
How low can it go?
Tolerates 100–200 fc but produces small, sparse leaves with long internodes. Variegated cultivars (Pink Princess, Birkin) revert to green.
Leggy vines, tiny leaves, faded variegation, loss of dark color in solid-green cultivars.
How much is too much?
Tolerates morning direct sun. Strong afternoon sun bleaches leaves and can scorch the climbing varieties.
Yellowed patches between leaf veins, brown crispy edges, leaves curl downward.
The most common Philodendron light mistake
Treating climbing types (Heartleaf, Brasil, Micans) the same as upright types (Birkin, Selloum). Climbers tolerate lower light; upright types need brighter.
Grow light substitute
A 20W full-spectrum LED 12 inches away substitutes for natural light. Variegated cultivars especially benefit from supplemental winter light.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
