How to Propagate Philodendron
The water method, step by step. Roots in 7–14 days, ready for soil in 4–6 weeks. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.

Best season
spring and summer
Step by step
Start with a stem cutting with at least one node.
- 1
Take a 4–6 inch stem cutting with at least one node and one leaf.
- 2
Cut just below the node with sterile scissors.
- 3
Strip the leaf closest to the cut so the node is exposed.
- 4
Place the node in room-temp water. Keep leaves above the waterline.
- 5
Bright indirect light. Change water every 5–7 days to prevent algae.
- 6
When roots are 2 inches long, pot in standard potting mix amended with perlite.
Common failure modes
- Cuttings without nodes will never root
- Stems too thin/soft from low light — mature stems propagate faster
- Water that’s too cold (below 65°F) slows rooting
