Moving your Philodendron outside for summer

Move outdoors when nights are reliably above 60°F. Dappled shade or north-facing porch is ideal. Climbing types (Heartleaf, Brasil) benefit from a moss pole or trellis outdoors.

Sun acclimation

Tolerates morning sun only after gradual acclimation. Direct afternoon sun bleaches the leaves regardless of acclimation. Keep in dappled or filtered light.

When to bring your Philodendron back inside

Bring inside when overnight forecasts drop below 55°F. Inspect carefully for thrips and mealybugs.

Common mistakes

Direct sun (yellow patches between leaf veins). Allowing the soil to freeze in fall (severe leaf drop). Skipping pest inspection (especially thrips, which spread fast indoors).
