Can a Rubber Plant Grow in Water?
Temporarily. rubber plant cuttings root in water but should move to soil within a few months. Mature rubber plants do not perform in water culture.
How long it lasts in water
2–3 months as a cutting. Mature plants in water decline within weeks.
How to set up
For propagation only. Take a stem cutting with 2–3 leaves, dip in rooting hormone (optional), and place the bottom in water. Submerge only the bare stem. Change water every 1–2 weeks. Pot up in soil once roots are 2 inches.
What can go wrong
White sticky sap can ooze from the cut end into the water. Long-term water culture stunts growth.
