How to Propagate Rubber Plant
The water method, step by step. Roots in 4–6 weeks, ready for soil in 8–10 weeks. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.

Best season
spring and summer
Step by step
Start with a 6-inch stem cutting with 2–3 leaves.
- 1
Cut a 6-inch tip with sterile pruners. Sap will run — this is normal but wear gloves (sap is mildly toxic).
- 2
Let the cut callus over for 1 hour to stop sap flow.
- 3
Remove lower leaves; keep top 2.
- 4
Place in room-temp water. Change weekly.
- 5
Bright indirect light. Roots form in 4–6 weeks.
- 6
Transfer to well-draining potting mix when roots are 2–3 inches.
Common failure modes
- Skin contact with sap can cause irritation — wear gloves
- Cuttings too soft from low light — use mature, woody stems
Pet safety warning: Rubber Plant is toxic to cats and dogs per ASPCA. Keep cuttings, water glasses, and trimmed leaves out of reach. Verify on ASPCA
