Houseplant Care in October
October is when houseplant growth slows visibly. The trick is recognizing it’s normal — not panicking and over-watering.
Quick answer
Cut watering 25–40%. Stop fertilizing by end of October. Inspect for any pests imported from outdoor plants.
Light in October
Sun angle is low and weak. Light meter readings at the same windows are 30–50% lower than in July. Plants now need premium window real estate.
Watering in October
Confirm soil moisture every time. Slow uptake means saturated soil sits longer = root rot.
Pests and problems to watch in October
Fungus gnats appear if soil stays too wet. Check yellow sticky traps weekly. Watch for the first signs of winter spider mite outbreaks as heating kicks on.
What to plan now
Test grow lights now. Place humidifier near humidity-sensitive species before the heat comes on.
