Houseplant Care in August

August is the last full month of strong growth. Anything you start now will mature before the October slowdown.

Quick answer

Final cuttings of the year. Last big repot opportunity. Start gradually reducing fertilizer as the month ends.

Light in August

Sun angle starts to drop. Light intensity at south windows decreases noticeably by late August.

Watering in August

Still at peak summer frequency. Watch nights cooling toward month-end — plants may slow water uptake.

Pests and problems to watch in August

Bring outdoor-summered plants in starting late August. UW Extension recommends a 2-week step-down (full shade for 1 week, then indoors) plus quarantine inspection.

What to plan now

Plan indoor spots for outdoor plants returning. Order grow lights before they ship out for winter.
