Do Monsteras Like to Be Root Bound?
Tolerates. Monsteras handle being slightly root-bound but prefer to be repotted every 2–3 years for best leaf development.
What happens to a root-bound Monstera
Slightly root-bound Monsteras grow slower but stay healthy. Severely root-bound Monsteras produce smaller leaves with fewer fenestrations.
When to repot anyway
Every 2–3 years, or when roots are growing dramatically out of drainage holes, or when new leaves emerge significantly smaller than older leaves.
Signs the plant is TOO root-bound
New leaves smaller than older ones, no fenestrations on new leaves despite good light, very fast soil drying.
When it’s time to repot, see the Monstera repotting guide.
