ZZ Plant Light Requirements
ZZ Plant needs 50–400 fc, classified as low light. Best window direction: Any direction including north; never direct sun.
How low can it go?
The most shade-tolerant common houseplant. Survives at 50 fc (the equivalent of a dim hallway with overhead lighting only).
Almost no signs except very slow growth. ZZ rarely complains about low light — it complains about overwatering, which is the bigger killer.
How much is too much?
Tolerates bright indirect light but stops responding above 600 fc. Direct sun — even morning sun — causes leaves to drop and the rhizome to scorch.
Yellow leaflets, leaflet drop, scorch marks on exposed leaves. ZZ plant is more sensitive to too much light than too little.
The most common ZZ Plant light mistake
Placing in a south-facing window. Owners overcorrect after hearing "tolerates low light" and put the plant in direct sun, where it burns within days.
Grow light substitute
Generally unnecessary. ZZ does fine with overhead room lighting alone. If you want faster growth, a 10W LED is sufficient — anything stronger risks burn.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
