Rubber Plant Light Requirements
Rubber Plant needs 300–1000 fc, classified as bright indirect light. Best window direction: East-facing (ideal) or south with sheer curtain.
How low can it go?
Below 200 fc, the lower leaves drop steadily. Variegated cultivars (Burgundy, Tineke) lose their pink-and-cream coloring entirely.
Lower leaves yellow and drop; plant becomes leggy; variegated cultivars revert to green.
How much is too much?
Tolerates morning direct sun. Strong afternoon sun burns the large leaves quickly.
Bleached patches on leaves facing the window, leaf curling, crispy brown edges.
The most common Rubber Plant light mistake
Moving the plant frequently to chase sun. Rubber plants HATE being moved — they drop leaves with any major change. Pick the brightest spot you have and leave it.
Grow light substitute
A 25–40W full-spectrum LED 12–18 inches away substitutes for window light. Rubber plants benefit from supplemental winter light to keep their lower leaves.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
