Pilea Light Requirements
Pilea needs 300–800 fc, classified as bright indirect light. Best window direction: East-facing (ideal); south with sheer curtain.
How low can it go?
Below 200 fc, pilea stretches dramatically toward light. Leaves get smaller and stems get longer.
Stretched stems with sparse leaves; smaller, paler leaves; the iconic "UFO" disc shape gets thinner.
How much is too much?
Tolerates morning direct sun. Direct afternoon sun yellows the coin-shaped leaves.
Yellow leaves, leaf curl, scorched patches on south-facing surfaces.
The most common Pilea light mistake
Not rotating the pot. Pilea grow aggressively toward light and become permanently lopsided within 2–3 weeks without weekly 90° rotation.
Grow light substitute
A 15–20W full-spectrum LED works well. Pilea respond fast to extra light with rapid pup (baby plant) production.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
