Parlor Palm Light Requirements
Parlor Palm needs 100–400 fc, classified as low light. Best window direction: East or north; never direct sun.
How low can it go?
Tolerates 75 fc — truly shade-tolerant. Named "parlor palm" because it survived in dim Victorian-era gas-lit parlors.
Very slow growth; sparse, thin fronds; lower fronds yellow and drop.
How much is too much?
Bright indirect is the upper limit. Direct sun yellows fronds within hours.
Yellow scorched fronds, especially on the side facing the window.
The most common Parlor Palm light mistake
Placing in a south-facing window because "palms need light." Parlor palm specifically evolved on Central American forest understory — it burns in direct sun like a fern.
Grow light substitute
Rarely needed. Parlor palms get along on overhead room lighting alone. A 10W LED is enough if you want faster growth.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
