Monstera Light Requirements
Monstera needs 400–1000 fc, classified as bright indirect light. Best window direction: East-facing (ideal) or south-facing with a sheer curtain.
How low can it go?
Survives at 200–400 fc but stops developing fenestrations (the iconic split leaves) entirely. New leaves emerge solid and small.
New leaves are smaller and lack splits; old leaves yellow and drop; growth slows to one leaf every few months.
How much is too much?
Tolerates morning direct sun. Afternoon direct sun through unfiltered glass scorches the leaves within hours, producing brown crispy patches.
Pale yellow patches on the leaf surface, brown crispy edges, leaf curling away from the light source.
The most common Monstera light mistake
Buying a Monstera for a dim corner because it's marketed as "easy." Without bright indirect light, the leaves stay solid and the plant looks nothing like its Instagram-famous form.
Grow light substitute
A 20–40W full-spectrum LED 12–18 inches above the plant, on for 12 hours per day, fully substitutes for natural light. Monsteras respond well to supplemental light in winter.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
