Boston Fern Light Requirements
Boston Fern needs 150–500 fc, classified as medium light. Best window direction: East or north (ideal); never direct sun.
How low can it go?
Tolerates 100 fc but stops producing new fronds. The plant slowly thins out.
Frond drop, slow growth, no new fronds at the center.
How much is too much?
Bright indirect is the upper limit. Direct sun — even morning sun — burns fronds within hours.
Brown crispy patches on fronds, especially on the side facing the window; rapid frond loss in dry air.
The most common Boston Fern light mistake
Pairing low humidity with bright light. Boston ferns crisp fast under 40% humidity, especially with strong light. Either move out of bright light or add a humidifier.
Grow light substitute
A 15–20W full-spectrum LED works if paired with 50%+ humidity. Boston ferns hate dry, bright conditions.

How to measure light at home
Download a free smartphone app like Light Meter or use a $20 digital light meter. Measure at the leaf surface, not the ceiling. As reference points: 50–100 fc is dim corner light; 100–400 fc is medium indirect; 400–1000 fc is bright indirect; 1000+ fc is direct sun.
