How to Repot a Snake Plant

Every 3–5 years — one of the longest repotting intervals of any houseplant. Best time: Late spring or early summer. Snake plants tolerate fall repotting in warm climates but never in cold winter rooms.. New pot size: 1–2 inches — snake plants LIKE being root-bound and bloom more reliably in tight pots.

Soil mix
Cactus and succulent mix, or standard potting mix amended with 40–50% perlite. Snake plants rot fast in retentive soil.

Signs your Snake Plant needs repotting

Pot bulging or cracking from rhizome pressure; rhizomes visible at the soil surface; plant has not produced new pups in over a year; water sits on top without absorbing.

Step-by-step

  1. 1
Stop watering 7–10 days before repotting so the soil is bone-dry. Repot dry.
  2. 2
Tip the pot sideways and slide the rhizome mass out. For severely pot-bound plants, you may need to cut the plastic pot off.
  3. 3
Brush away loose soil and inspect rhizomes for rot. Cut away any soft, dark, or smelly sections with sterile shears.
  4. 4
If dividing, find a natural separation between rhizomes and pull or cut apart. Each division should have at least 3–4 leaves.
  5. 5
Let any cut surfaces callus for 24–48 hours before planting.
  6. 6
Pot in dry cactus mix at the same depth as before — do NOT bury the rhizome.
  7. 7
Wait 1 week, then water lightly. Resume normal watering after 2 weeks.

What kills Snake Plant after repotting

  • Repotting while wet — wet rhizomes rot fast in fresh mix
  • Burying the rhizome — causes near-instant rot
  • Using standard potting mix without amending — the #1 cause of snake plant death
