How to Propagate ZZ Plant

The division method, step by step. Roots in rhizome division: rooted immediately; leaf propagation: 3–6 months, ready for soil in 4–6 weeks for division. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.

Step by step

Start with a rhizome clump from the parent plant, or single leaflets for the patient grower.

  1. 1

Division method: slide the parent out of the pot. Identify natural rhizome clumps (the potato-like underground structures).

  2. 2

Use a sterile knife to separate clumps, each with at least 2 stems and their own rhizome.

  3. 3

Let cut surfaces callus 24–48 hours before potting.

  4. 4

Pot in well-draining cactus or aroid mix.

  5. 5

Wait a full week before watering. ZZ rhizomes are highly rot-prone post-division.

Common failure modes

  • Watering immediately after division rots the cut rhizomes
  • Leaf propagation works but takes 6–12 months to produce a small plant — most growers give up
Pet safety warning: ZZ Plant is toxic to cats and dogs per ASPCA. Keep cuttings, water glasses, and trimmed leaves out of reach. Verify on ASPCA
