How to Propagate Spider Plant

The offsets method, step by step. Roots in immediately if pre-rooted on parent; 1–2 weeks otherwise, ready for soil in 3–4 weeks. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.

spring through summer; offsets form most actively then

Step by step

Start with a baby plantlet (offset) already growing on the parent’s flower stalk.

  1. 1

Look for the baby plantlets (offsets) hanging from the parent’s long stalks.

  2. 2

Wait until each plantlet has at least 4 leaves and visible root nubs.

  3. 3

You have two options. Method 1: snip the plantlet off and root in water (2–3 weeks).

  4. 4

Method 2 (recommended): place a small pot of soil next to the parent, lay the plantlet on the soil while still attached, pin in place. Roots form in 1–2 weeks. Then cut the connecting stalk.

  5. 5

    Water lightly until established.

Common failure modes

  • Cutting plantlets before they’re mature (less than 4 leaves)
  • Burying the plantlet too deep — the crown should sit at soil level
