How to Propagate Golden Pothos
The water method, step by step. Roots in 7–14 days, ready for soil in 4–6 weeks. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.
Step by step
Start with a stem cutting with at least one node and one variegated leaf.
- 1
Identify a healthy vine with strong yellow-and-green variegation. Variegation is preserved through cuttings, so picking a well-marked stem matters.
- 2
Find a node (the brown bump along the stem where a leaf attaches) and cut just below it with sterile scissors.
- 3
Each cutting should have 1–2 leaves and at least one bare node. Strip the leaf closest to the cut so the node is exposed.
- 4
Submerge ONLY the node in a glass of room-temp water. Leaves stay above the water line.
- 5
Place in bright indirect light (more light = more variegation in the new growth). Change water every 5–7 days.
- 6
When roots reach 2 inches, pot in standard potting mix. Keep slightly moist for the first 2 weeks while roots adapt to soil.
Common failure modes
- Low light during rooting fades variegation in new growth — give bright indirect light, not low light
- Submerging leaves causes rot at the water line
- Choosing a stem with mostly green leaves — the resulting plant will revert to mostly green
