How to Propagate Calathea
The division method, step by step. Roots in rooted immediately; new growth in 4–6 weeks, ready for soil in established in 6–8 weeks. Below are the steps that actually work plus the failure modes that get most propagations.
Step by step
Start with the parent plant’s natural clump of stems with attached root mass.
- 1
Slide the mature calathea out of its pot in early spring.
- 2
Gently tease apart the rootball to find natural clumps of stems with their own root mass.
- 3
Use sterile pruners only if you must cut. Otherwise pull clumps apart by hand.
- 4
Pot each division immediately in moisture-retentive potting mix.
- 5
Water lightly. Keep humidity above 50% during establishment.
Common failure modes
- Stem cuttings DO NOT WORK for calathea — only division
- Letting divisions sit dry too long — calatheas are humidity-dependent
- Dividing in winter — plant has no energy to recover, often fails
