Does a ZZ Plant Flower?
What the bloom looks like
A short, pale-yellow-to-green spadix (finger-like flower spike, typical of the Araceae family) emerges low on the plant, partially hidden by a similarly colored spathe (modified leaf). Total bloom is only 2–3 inches tall and easily overlooked because it resembles a small unfurling leaf.
How to trigger blooming
Maturity (5+ years) plus consistent bright indirect light. Pot-bound ZZ plants bloom more reliably than those in oversized pots.
How long the bloom lasts
Each bloom lasts 2–4 weeks. ZZ plants typically bloom once per year if at all.
How likely is it indoors?
Very rare indoors — most ZZ plants never bloom because they're kept in dim conditions. The blooms also so closely resemble new leaf growth that owners often miss them entirely.
After blooming
Cut the spent spadix at the base. The bloom uses minimal energy from the plant, so no special post-bloom care is needed.
