Can a Jade Plant Live Outside?

Yes — in summer only. Yes — jade plants actively prefer being outside in summer with full sun. They develop red leaf margins in full sun (a desirable stress response). Bring inside when nights drop below 50°F. Year-round outdoors in zones 9–11.

Moving your Jade Plant outside for summer

Move outside when nights are above 55°F. Jade plants thrive in full direct sun once acclimated — a sunny patio or porch ledge is ideal. Faster growth than indoors and reliable winter blooming triggered by outdoor temperature swings.

Sun acclimation

Gradual sun acclimation over 2 weeks: morning sun only at first, gradually increasing exposure. After 2 weeks, jade plants can handle full all-day sun. Skipping acclimation causes severe sunburn.

When to bring your Jade Plant back inside

Bring inside before overnight lows reach 50°F. Jade plants tolerate one or two nights at 45°F but consistent cold causes irrecoverable damage. Inspect for mealybugs (jade plants are mealybug-prone).

Common mistakes

No sun acclimation (severe burn). Overwatering during outdoor rainy weeks (root rot). Leaving outside through cold snaps below 40°F (death).
