Can a Boston Fern Live Outside?

Yes — in summer only. Yes — Boston ferns thrive outdoors in summer in deep shade with high humidity. They look dramatically better outside than inside because outdoor humidity is typically much higher. Bring inside when nights drop below 50°F.

Moving your Boston Fern outside for summer

Move outside when nights are above 55°F. Deep shade is ideal — covered porch, under dense canopy, or shaded hanging basket. Boston ferns need daily watering in hot dry weather outdoors.

Sun acclimation

No direct sun. Keep in deep shade outdoors at all times.

When to bring your Boston Fern back inside

Bring inside before nights drop below 55°F. The transition back to dry indoor air causes dramatic frond drop — expect to lose 30–50% of fronds. A humidifier helps. Inspect for slugs and snails (especially if hanging at ground level).

Common mistakes

Direct sun (instant frond burn). Letting hanging baskets dry out completely (frond drop). Severe shock from outdoor-to-indoor transition (use a humidifier).
