Can a Alocasia Live Outside?

Yes — in summer only. Yes — alocasias thrive outdoors in summer in dappled shade with high humidity. They often produce dramatically larger leaves outdoors. Bring inside when nights drop below 60°F — alocasias go dormant below this temperature.

Moving your Alocasia outside for summer

Move outside when nights are reliably above 65°F. Dappled shade is ideal — deep shade is too dim. Alocasias drink more water outdoors and may need daily watering in hot weather.

Sun acclimation

Filtered morning sun only after gradual acclimation. Direct afternoon sun burns the velvety leaf surfaces.

When to bring your Alocasia back inside

Bring inside before nights drop below 60°F. Inspect for spider mites carefully — alocasias are prone to severe mite infestations.

Common mistakes

Direct sun (burnt leaves, faded silver veining). Letting soil dry completely (leaf drop). Not separating corms during outdoor growing season (overcrowded pots).
