Can a Monstera Grow in Water?

Temporarily. Monstera cuttings can live in water for many months while they root, but they perform best long-term in soil. Mature Monsteras struggle in water-only setups.

How long it lasts in water

3–6 months as a cutting. Beyond that, leaves get smaller and the plant cannot develop fenestrations without soil nutrients.

How to set up

Cuttings only. Take a stem cutting with at least one node and an aerial root. Submerge the node and aerial root; keep leaves above water. Change water every 1–2 weeks. Pot up in soil once roots reach 2–3 inches.

What can go wrong

Long-term water culture stunts the plant. Lack of nutrients prevents fenestrations on new leaves. Algae in clear glass.
